St. Patrick's Day in New Orleans
Anyone who grew up in the great city of New Orleans knows that the party never stops! We just wrapped up our fantastic carnival season of 2016 now it’s time to get ready for the next big party, St. Patrick’s Day!! St. Patrick’s day is on Thursday, March 17th this year. Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day began in the United States in New York City around 1737. Today, New Orleans hosts the biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebration in the south. Leading up to the 17th of March, there are a handful of parades in the New Orleans area. The throws at these parades are far from ordinary. Throws from St. Patrick’s Day parades include carrots, onions, cabbages, and sometimes potatoes. Following the parades, many locals use their loot to make soup. One thing is common for a get together in New Orleans no matter the occasion. Every New Orleans festivity includes music, delicious local food, and of course, adult beverages! Some of these adult beverages have been dyed green. Rumor has it that the green beer holders get lucky! This is an equation for a good time, huh?
Not only will there be parades, but also block parties around the city to celebrate this Irish holiday. On Friday, March 11th in the French Quarter, Molly’s at the Market is hosting an Irish parade. For the uptowners, Tracey’s Bar and Parasol’s, located in the Irish Channel on Magazine Street, will be hosting block parties on March 12th and March 17th. This is where you can find green beer and a great time!
The Irish Channel St. Patrick’s Day committee formed in 1947 in New Orleans. Since then, the committee has stuck together through thick and thin to keep the organization strong. Today, the organization contributes to our New Orleans community tremendously. They have been very generous to the Special Olympics and various other charities in our area. Because of this, not only will it be fun to go out and enjoy the festivities, but will also be rewarding to be part of something that provides for the city of New Orleans.
There is something missing, however. What will we wear to this wonderful party in the greatest city on earth?
